Day 23: Momma Bear

Read: Psalm 18:6

“I called to the Lord in my distress, and I cried to my God for help. From His temple He heard my voice, and my cry to Him reached His ears.”

Understand:

  1. Who can we cry out to when we need help?
  2. What is God’s reaction?

Listen:

Recently, I watched a video about two bear cubs with their momma. One of the cubs was trying to get atop a large snowbank that his mother and sibling had already traversed. This happened on the side of a road, such as what you might see on a highway when the snowplow trucks cleared the roads but pushed the snow up against the bank. The mother of the cub was watching her baby to make sure it was able to get on the bank. At one point, this car had slowed down, obviously to take the video, and at that moment, the cub started yelling. Maybe it was just frustrated because it couldn’t get onto the snowbank but the mother thought the car was trying to hurt her baby and took off after the car! No questioning what was happening, it thought its child was in danger, became infuriated, and was going after the threat. Someone was going to get it!

I have two sons, they are both adults now. One is married and the other will be married in a couple of years. My boys and, now their significant others, tease me because I’m usually calm (my husband has always been the spitfire in our family) but if something or someone messes with my boys and now their girls, my momma bear comes out. Have you ever heard the saying, “hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorn?” I totally believe this but see it more as a mother. You just don’t mess with the bear cubs. I believe that is just one of the instincts all females have and that is given to us as a reminder from God. You see, often, I think when we are under attack we believe that we are in it all by ourselves. But, scripture tells us how God reacts to His children when we call out to Him in our distress. As we are created in His image, it’s no surprise that the momma bear comes out in Him too. He doesn’t want to see His children hurting anymore than we do and when we call out to Him, He is ready to defend us.

We looked at the beginning of the verse in Psalm in our Scripture for today, but you have to get the full picture of God’s reaction. This totally explains how the momma bear in all of us feels when we want to protect our children. Just remember this, when you call out to God for help, He’s going to help and even if you can’t see it right that moment, just know that behind the scenes, something big is happening!

I called to the Lord

in my distress,

and I cried to my God for help.

From His temple He heard

my voice,

and my cry to Him

reached His ears.

Then the earth shook

and quaked;

the foundations of the mountains trembled;

they shook because he burned with anger.

Smoke rose from His nostrils,

and consuming fire came

from His mouth;

coals were set ablaze by it.

He parted the heavens

and came down,

a dark cloud beneath His feet.

He rode on a cherub and flew,

soaring on the wings

of the wind.

He made darkness

His hiding place,

dark storm clouds His canopy

around Him.

From the radiance

of His presence,

His clouds swept onward

with hail and blazing coals.

The Lord thundered

from heaven;

the Most High projected

His voice.

He shot His arrows

and scattered them;

He hurled lightening bolts

and routed them.

The depths of the sea

became visible,

the foundations of the world

were exposed,

at Your rebuke, Lord,

at the blast of the breath

of Your nostrils.

He reached down from on high

and took hold of me;

He pulled me out of

deep waters.

He rescued me . . .”

Psalm 18:6-17

Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, You have made us in Your image and we know what it’s like to want to protect our children. Help us to remember that You feel the same way about us and that when we cry out to You for help, You are there for us. Give us strength in knowing You are at work in all things. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
