Day 29: The Birds of the Air

Read: Job 12:7-10

“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.”

Understand:

  1. What else, besides people, can teach you about God?
  2. What does God hold in His hand?

Listen: A couple of summers ago, my family and I took a trip to the mountains in Northern Georgia. We stayed in a cabin that was, as expected, off the beaten path allowing us to be surrounded by nature. If you enjoy really digging into the benefits of nature from the medical perspective, there is an explanation regarding why being in nature is so beneficial. There are actually chemicals in the air in nature called phytoncides that you breathe in when you are outside. These chemicals have actually been proven to strengthen the immune system. Being in nature also has proven to reduce stress, improve your creativity, and can make you a happier, nicer person. There are more benefits to being in nature than even these! While we were in the mountains, it felt as if I was rejuvenated. Just sitting on the deck and listening to the wind blow in the trees or the soft patter of rain on the roof or the chirping of birds, was just pure peace. It gave me the opportunity to put a bit of my life in perspective.

The scripture verse that I used for today, reminds me that being in nature really does give insight on how involved our Lord is in everyday life. The Bible says in Romans 1:19-20 “For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made.” We gain comfort in the proof that God places all around us just as a reminder of His presence. Not only has God placed nature all around for us to enjoy, He has provided chemicals that we can breathe in that benefit our health but He also provides reassurance to us that He is everywhere and will take care of us. Take a moment to walk outside today and just look around. Breathe in those phytoncides and just remember that God loves us enough to create beautiful things for our health as well as for us to have reassurance of how much He loves us.

Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, You have given us so many reassurances of how much You love us. Help us to simply stop and smell the roses and remember that we are truly precious in Your sight. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
