Day 40: Lifting Up

Read: Ephesians 4:29-32

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.  Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Understand:

  1. What should not come out of our mouths?
  2. What should come out of our mouths?
  3. Why do you think God points out the type of words that we should be speaking?

Listen: One commentary by the website, BibleRef.com, explains our verse for today well. This commentary explains that we have guidelines for how we are using our words. It states specifically that “The goal is to show grace to those who are listening to our words . . . not . . . prioritize our own feelings, but make it our intent to help others through our words.” If our words are to be used to lift others up, as Scripture tells us, then it might be beneficial for us to really pay attention to what we are saying. It seems like this should be easier for people. I just wanted to leave this thought with you today. Perhaps, if we all just took time to show people how to use uplifting words, it would catch on. Perhaps others would see the positivity in it and embrace such a beautiful change in our world.

Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, may our words always bring You glory but help us to remember that words can destroy others and that we are told to do just the opposite in Your word. Help us to practice using our words to lift others up so that others may see the benefits and do the same. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
