Day 43: Heaven

Read: Revelation 22:1-5

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”

Understand:

  1. What is as bright as crystal?
  2. Where does the river of the water of life flow from?
  3. What will be written on the foreheads of Christians?
  4. Why is there no need for a lamp or the sun?

Listen: I had a conversation today with my grandmother about heaven. Sometimes I forget about the descriptions that the Bible gives us about heaven and my conversation with my grandmother today made me take a moment to think. We talked about the different things we have read in the Bible regarding heaven and I found myself becoming animated and excited while talking about it, through no real prompting of my own. I find that I take the glorious reality of heaven for granted because I know it exists and know, as a believer in Christ, that I will be in heaven when I die and yet, how often do I give it serious thought.

When Mamaw and I were talking, I was telling her about two books I had read: Touching Heaven by Dr. Chauncey Crandall and Heaven by Randy Alcorn. (If you’ve never read these books, I totally recommend them. Wow! What vivid pictures you will get!) These books quote directly from scripture in referencing how heaven is for believers in Christ. One thing we talked about was how each of us will be using the gifts God gives us when we are in heaven as members of a community. We will be contributing based upon what God has made us good at. The only difference is that because heaven is not a fallen world, such as where we are now, there won’t be pain or disease to hold us down. Can you imagine how productive we will all be in a place like this? Can you imagine how amazing this will be?

What this conversation did was remind me that eternity can be so precious for those who believe in Christ and accept His salvation. It also was a reminder that my focus needed to be on those things which are eternal and making sure I tell as many people about Christ as possible. It really put things in perspective. I believe I needed that! It’s so easy to get caught up on things that draw us away from telling others about salvation through Christ and yet this is the most important thing we should be doing.

I just want to encourage you. If you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Savior, read Romans 10:9 and John 3:16 in the Bible. Not only can this change your life right now, but it can have an eternal impact. Eternity is real. Heaven is real. Salvation is made available to you through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the salvation that You have given us. Help us to know You and accept Your saving grace so we can spend eternity with You and those we love in heaven. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
